I Have to Do Another Baby Post

Allright I am still experiencing the proud parent syndrome so I'm doing another post on Kalea. Things are still going well and she has been very peaceful. I find myself waking up and just watching her sleep.

The biggest broblem has been dealing with the diaper covers-the pee seems to leak out of the leg holes quite often resulting in more already dreaded amounts of laundry (I am thankful for running water and an efficient washer). We haven't tried the vinyl pullovers because we have been trying to avoid plastic. Still, if anyone has any tips about preventing leaking with the cloth prefolds I'd love to hear them.

De-lurking here...congrats on the new baby. We used prefolds when my daughter was first born...the main issue was making sure that the diaper was totally tucked in the cover...though we use Bummis and ProWrap covers. However, our fave diaper is the Kissaluvs with snaps. Definitely more expensive...even the runny breastmilk poop never leaked out. They're all we use now (she's 18 months).

Unrelated question--is it pronounced Ka-lay-ah or Ka-lee-ah? Or neither? Either way, I think it's a great name. Does it have any special meaning?

We used Bummis with flat diapers for my daughter, which were really easy to use, but they wore out and started leaking with extended use (that was 11 years ago though, so maybe they've improved). We were given a set of Motherease diapers when my son was born and they were amazing. The covers never leaked and the diapers fit from birth to potty training. Kind of a lot of money to shell out, but well worth it in my opinion (I have seen used ones on Ebay). I'd send you mine, but my 4 month old nephew is using them at the moment. : )
She is too adorable.

I used vinyl and it worked fine after the baby was a few weeks old. At the beginning the legs were just too tiny and the pee would leek out anyway.

PS: Back then I praised my washing machine and dryer just the same :)

Kissaluvs fitted are indeed the best fitted IMO also-well one of the best for a reasonable price. They do have a "seconds" store on their website where you can find some with minimal defect that do not effect the function of the dipe. I would say too, to make sure that the covers you use have gussets in the leg area so you have a little barrier to prevent leaks. But all in all the best covers too, IMO are the ones that happen to be plastic-they certainly cut down on laundry. SO I guess its your choice between water or plastic.....good luck mama! Prefolds are rough!

jocele: Thanks. We have just discovered how important tucking in the diaper is. I think we were using too small of a diaper. This past day we have been able to use the diaper covers over.

m: It is pronounced Ka-lee-ah. It is hawaiian and has some meaning of bright. Earlier we thought about naming her Loa or Lowa, but we wanted something a bit livlier. Kalea seemed to fit.

cheryl:I'll look into those thanks.

mone: I have heard others swear by the vinyl. That's what my mom used on me.

Kim:The covers Moh made are beginning to work better now that we have started using bigger prefolds. The fitted diaprs just seem so much it would be hard to make the investment. I guess it is trial and error.

I was goin to mention the tucking in, but it seems you got that under control. I also like the snap wraps better, but haven't tried those in the little sizes. I also used Bummis and Prowraps.

The only other thing I thought of is did you break in the diapers. If they are new you have to wash like six times (and line dry if possible) I think (it has been awhile since mine were new) to get all the natural oils out so they absorb. Earthbaby.com has a lot of good information.

Baby posts just fine; I'm sure the proud parent thing is supposed to last for a LONG time! Looks like you got some good advice here, but I'm sure the Mommyblog world would have LOTS of advice for you!

You go nuts with the doting parent thing, there's nothing wrong with that.

On the diaper thing, I don't know poo. But I did just read this yesterday. Let me know if it makes sense.

Good for you Burdockboy!!

Congratulations on Kalea's arrival! I hope you and Moh enjoy every moment with her. When they are newborn it's easy to stare and watch them all day and night. Glad you are enjoying new fatherhood. She's beautiful!!

Hey Burdockboy

Go nuts with the baby posts. There's no shame in sharing the biggest thing in your life.

I think a lot of the leaking is just a game of catchup you're both going to learn to play. Today you'll fold the diapers and things will work fine, then she'll get bigger and you'll have to adjust your routine. We did prefolds until she was done with diapers, and we used liners, doublers, and doubled diapers (a newborn size inside a regular prefold)...but we always used a vinyl-lined cover. And we did LOADS of laundry, but that was okay; it comes with the program.
