Bigotry for the 21st Century
With the recent constitutional ban of gay marriage and civil unions here in Wisconsin, I have come to believe that many feel discrimination of homosexuals is acceptable. Even up here in the Northwoods, an area that votes solidly democrat (over 60%), more people voted "yes" to add an amendment to ban gay marriage. That means thousands of people voted a straight dem ticket only to vote "yes" on a discrimination issue. Bastards. I did, however, look at my township which voted 12 -35 "No" (let's hear it for the Keystoner's).
Perhaps I am naive or out of touch, but I really don't understand how educated, normally rational people can openly show bigotry towards another group of individuals that pose no threat to them. Did we not learn anything from the civil rights? Womyns rights? Please, enlighten me.
The Christian Right has spread their hate for too long. Science is beginning to debunk their theories of homosexuality being unnatural, like this Oregon State University study. We will always have paranoid wacko's like this, but the rest of us need to evolve into the 21st century and promote love and equality for all. None of us are really that different from each other.

That article on soy was pretty interesting. I had no idea that being a homosexual was all about being too feminine. You learn something new every day!
; )
Let me tell you something I have learned living in the "bible belt". I am a christian BUT most christains don't buy into the bible part where Jesus says "all sin is bad sin" (to paraphrase) Human nature wants SOMEONE to be worse than they are. Hence--nobody is pissed about sinners like me who maybe doesn't always keep the sabbath, or someone who might be envious of his neighbors new car so goes and buys his own mercedes to drive to church. BUT homosexuality--well that is "out" there for all to see, AND to comment on and make fun off. Because as you notice when people talk about it --it generally is more about gay men than woman (lesbians seem to be an after thought) Men get more "whacked" about the gay issue in regards to men, where-as they make jokes about lesbians. Maybe they need to make laws about what position straight people can "do it" in as they did long ago hahahaha We wouldn't want to offend now would we :-) because we all KNOW that no matter what a shit head you are in life---GOD only cares whether or not you were a homosexual or not. Right?!
P.S
If science proves homosexuality is innate as the article states, do you think christians would be for or against aborting a "gay" fetus??
Now that's a sticky wicky situation for some isn't it.
Monica, you are on fire today!
Sticky wicky question, indeed.
Speaking for my wife, who isn't bigotted but a devout Christian and Bible believer, she would vote YES on a ban simply b/c she would feel guilty voting for the allownace of something, she feels, goes against the Bible.
The Bible doesn't beat it home nearly as much as the Christian right. Having not looked too deeply into the Biblical reasoning, I can't say exactly if it's FOR or AGAINST. I don't know how much of the Bible has been passed along as the exact words of God either. That's why I don't debate people on what the Bible says. It's up to interpretation, hidden history and how literally one chooses to tae the scriptures.
I personally feel that they deserve to right to wed, as they too are people with feelings, responsibility and should not be downed by law. I also think the outrage against gays from a huge amt. of Christians shows just how ass-backwards their collective priorities are. Why not fight like rabbid dogs to end discrimination, protect God's creation, stop the killing in IRaq and other areas? Instead, they blindly support the supposed Christian Bush and other phonies like him, and the BS that modern conservative agendas have set.
This is a symptom of ignorance and hate, in my opinion. Straight married people (some) feel this need to defend the crown that God says is theirs. My wife and I are divided on it, but since neither of us plan on bringing a 3rd party to the table that one of us would have to gayly marry, we're OK. I try not to bring it up unless I am in the mood to argue.
If we ever achieve civil or women's rights, perhaps then we will learn. We live in an enirely hateful soociety.
The State of Alaska recently included same-sex benefits in their employee package. Only about a dozen people have filed for such benefits. Even when the law is liberal, the reality of community prejudice is such that few dare step forward and claim their right.
In Idaho their was a measurement on the ballot here regarding the issue of same sex marriage.
I don't recall the exact wording.
Idaho was loosing their right wing vote so they had to get the bigots down to poll and vote.
I don't think if Idaho didn't have the measurements on the ballot. I know less people would of showed up at the polls.
This what gets to me. They think they make homosexuality illegal it going to stop them.
I look at it as "Marijuana is illegal and people still smokes it"
Sorry about getting on my soap box.
This is a heavy topic for sure. I am a christian also but have such a difficult time with people who judge someone elses definition of love as wrong or sordid or evil or whatever ignorant word they come up with.
My favorite quote of Ghandi is
I like your Christ
I do not like your christians,
they are so unlike your Christ.
hoping for peace,
Kim
Cheryl: Soy does = gay. Also look out for show tunes and if you're male Oprah and if you're female Rosie Odonall.
fv&AA: The thing about the study is I have heard that they heve manipulated it so that the animals were no longer gay. Now that gets into some serious ethics.
crall: The GOP has done a marvelous job to pump up it's support of the religious right by bringing up these hot button issues so they can pus their real agenda like lowering taxes for the wealthy and hawkish wars. Those poor christians are just pawns by the Bush admin as far as I can see.
tf: You're right we nver really have moved totally acheived civil and womyn's rights but at least it's politically incorrect to show bigotry in those (look what happened to the Seinfeld guy). But gays are still free for the bashing.
peppylady: You may have had a Dem House in your district if that wasn't on the ballot. You're right their will still be gays, but they should still have the support that same sex marriages enjoy.
Kim: Ghandi and I think alike. I wish we could have done lunch :)
I was reared in the Bible Belt as a Southern Baptist. All the hell-fire and brimstone condemnation (not to mention the jumping through moral hoops) turned me bitter against the judgmentalism of so many Christians. I'm not sure about Christianity anymore... still trying to sort myself out on that, but I do know that there is much to be said for what we know as Jesus' call for each person to "love your neighbor as yourself." I'm a live and let live sort of person, and I really think that targeting homosexual people is a violation. They should be allowed to make their choices without any infringement from the government or any other establishments. If they decide to be a family, then they should have the same rights, entitlements, and benefits that heterosexual families have.
Moral gouging makes Christianity as a whole look unappealing, though there are plenty of decent Christian people in the world. We don't have to agree with each other, but we all need acceptance and love.
Sorry...just a test on an old post of yours (you can delete)...I can't seem to enter my own site to respond to comments. grrrrrrrrr!
