Midwest Roadside Attractions

Who says we don't have culture here in the Midwest? Below is the Leaning Silo of Coleta, built by Illinoians instead of Italians.

Wisconsin gives us an intersection composed by someone from WDOT with a sense of humor.

And finally, a rastafarian's delight- The Bong Museum up here in the Northwoods.

You made me smile...the smile ref is great...the road signs would doubly confuse a Harley rider...and why an airplane on the "Bong Museum" sign - flying high?

Later.

Then there's always Big Bone Lick State Park in Kentucky. Located on Beaver Road. Fill in your own jokes...

Not to worry, you have lots of culture. I love the leaning silo. Classic.

I guess Mr Bong got around Wisco spreading his name throughout.

T.Fool:
Maybe it was a Harley man at WDOT after all Harley is Wisco.

e4: I followed your link to find that the park is between the communities of Beaverlick and Rabbit Hash. Who is coming up with the names down there?

Carla: Yeah we do have some culture. There is an accordian museum over in Superior.

The row of smut/head shops intermingled with the cheese shops along I-94 near the Illinois boarder should not be overlooked.

For what it's worth, the 'Bong Museum' celebrates 'sconny native Richard Bong, who as the Army Air Force's highest scoring ace in WWII.

I'm sure the name didn't sound nearly as funny when they dedicated the museum way back when.... then again, maybe it did.

Bart, I'm totally familiar. Bong recreation park here in S.E. WI was going to be a military air base, but after the war ended it wasn't needed anymore and was basically abandoned.

toby: naughty but nice. I always see that place. Usually some of he letters are burnt out.

Bart: Yeah I see that museum every time I go to Duluth. It's fairly new and reaally spruces up the dingy look of Superior.

I'm not sure when the bong became drug paraphernalia, so I have no idea if his army buddies had a good chuckle or not.

Ever seen Carhenge in Nowhereland, Nebraska? That's a fun one. It's only about 4 hours out of your way if you happen to be driving though Nebraska for no reason...

I've always wanted to stop by the cheese museum somewhere between Madison and Chicago, but never have.

Dinner tonight was cheese, a second kind of cheese, a third kind of cheese, tomato, bread and milk. And I don't even live in Wisco...

bong "water pipe for marijuana," 1960s, U.S. slang, said to have been introduced by Vietnam veterans, from Thai baung, lit. "cylindrical wooden tube."

Lady Bonds, Mars cheese castle would be the one that stands out the most. It's a few miles north of The Kenosha Military Museum. Unless you really want to purchase cheese, there is no reason to stop at either of them. The Cheese museum is a store with a few window boxes and the military museum is a dumping ground for surplus crap. I mean surplus... culture. ;)
