Getting Ready For Baby

Well the time is getting near for when we welcome our little one into the outside world. The next couple of weeks will be spent making sure that everything is in place. We still have to figure out how to install the carseat, pick up the birthing tub we rented, make a baby wipe solution and find a good container to put the wipes in, and make a bunch of food in advance to freeze and can for quick and easy meals. There are probably a couple other things, but I don't have my list in front of me.

The majority of baby items we have bought used, have been given to us, or made (We did splurge on a new organic onesie from the Green Mercantile store in Duluth). We were even lucky enough to buy an Amby Baby used. My partner, Moh, has created a wonderful diaper covern pattern. She uses old wool sweaters and some wool fabric I found at a garage sale. She has also been making receiving blankets out of old flannel sheets and an infant stuffed animal, also from the sheet.

Our midwife says everything is going normal and we should be able to do the homebirth that we want. That's good news because we both feel fairly uneasy in a hospital. We also don't want to have to go through the hassle of explaining to the nurses and doctors about all of the routine tests and monitoring the hospital does that we don't want to be subjected to. Oh well, I'll keep updating our progress.

Wow! This is so exciting. We had an AmbyBaby also, though we coslept for the first few months, and we loved it. They are really nice, cozy beds and it really helped our refluxy guy to sleep much better.

Best wishes.

Wow! Congrats! Odd to be a new "lurker/reader" and suddenly hear about such an amazing event in your lives.

Best wishes!

Wow, what an exciting time for the two of you!
Moh sounds like a very crafty woman, creating her own diaper cover pattern. They look great.
Best wishes!

I agree with you on the hospital uneasyness. I worked in them for a number of years and I saw how they treated new parents and babies. No thankyou!

homebirths are so much nicer than hospital births in every aspect!

as for baby wipe solution, i just use plain warm water. just run the cloth under the faucet as needed. baby appreciates a warm wet cloth as opposed to a cold one!

i love the flannel rabbit!

Everyone: Thank you for your kind wishes

Jenny: We're really looking forward to using the AmbyBaby. I'm glad you had good luck with it. We were being very concious consumers and emailed the company about the product because it's made in China. One of the heads of the company called us back insuring us the factory where it is made pays the employees well. Still we bought it used.

Nio: We toured the hospital and while the birthing area wasn't as bad as I thought it was, there was just too many machines and plastic for us to feel comfortable.

Stella: Thanks. I love hearing positive homebirth feedback.
We will probably try only water, but we are thinking about perhaps adding some oil or something to it. Moh has a recipe from somewhere that is supposed to help to prevent rashing.

When my husband and I have a baby I am hoping to be able to have a home birth as well. All the best for you and yours :)

Good luck, but be prepared for abrupt changes that may occur. Be really, really flexible about everything, including the list of presents you don't want the child to have. Also, while technology can be intrusive, it also has a real place in our lives. Have fun.

crall: thanks. I'll try to keep posting through it all.

jaspenelle: thanks. Hopefully homebirths will start being accepted more.

coldh20: Yeah, I'm not looking forward to the initial stress. We have little family so it's pretty easy to inform them our wants. We will use tech. if we have to, but too often it is abused. We won't put our childs life before our anti-hospital beliefs though.

emme: thanks. We're really hoping the diaper covers do their job.
